Alaska Milk and San Miguel Beer, the recent Fiesta Conference title protagonists, face separate rivals today, confident of another solid campaign with intact, formidable rosters in the 36th PBA season at the Araneta Coliseum today.
The Aces tangle with the Barako Bull Energy Boosters at 5 p.m. then the Beermen tackle the Air21 Express at 7:30 p.m.
It’s the third playdate of the new PBA season featuring the pro debut of high-profile rookies Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao, Rey Guevarra and Elmer Espiritu and the first game of Alaska in its 25th year of participation in the league.
The Aces are likely to come out strong in a bid to start the momentous season in grand fashion.
With a champion roster strengthened by the addition of Espiritu and Bonbon Custodio, the Aces are heavily favored against a team which has been league cellar dweller in the last two years.

Barcelona beats Lakers 92-88 in exhibition game

BARCELONA, Spain – Juan Carlos Navarro scored 25 points to help Barcelona beat the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers 92-88 in an exhibition on Thursday.
Spanish center Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 24 points but had only one field goal in the second half. His homecoming was spoiled by the Euroleague champion in a game that lived up to the billing of an informal intercontinental showdown.
"You always want to win, but it was an emotional game," Gasol said. "The fans enjoyed it, and the atmosphere was spectacular. We lost, but when your friends win you have to be happy for them."
The Lakers blew a 12-point advantage in the second half and were outplayed down the stretch after the game was tied at 72 midway through the fourth quarter.

Johnny Abarrientos might end up his illustrious PBA career with his original team Alaska Milk after all.
If negotiations fall through, Abarrientos will rejoin the team where he spent the best years of his pro career.
A reliable source said Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo has offered the 1996 MVP awardee a deal that’s hard to refuse.
Abarrientos is an unrestricted free agent working as skills coach/on-call reserve with Barangay Ginebra.
In a recent STAR exclusive, Abarrientos, now 40, said he’s looking to play one more season before eventually calling it quits.

FEU team owner Anton Montinola on Wednesday debunked rumors that Glenn Capacio was sacked at halftime of Game 2 of the UAAP senior men’s basketball finals against Ateneo and said Dr. Mikey Bengzon advised the Tamaraws coach to go to the hospital after a 150-100 reading of his blood pressure in the dugout.
“It was a high-pressure, high-intensity atmosphere,” said Montinola of last Thursday’s game which the Blue Eagles won, 65-62, to clinch the title at the Araneta Coliseum.

Far Eastern University formally accepted the resignation of Glenn Capacio as its head coach on Wednesday and is likely to form a search committee to find a suitable replacement to the one-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner.
Capacio announced last Monday that he’s stepping down as FEU coach after his failure to give his alma mater a championship after being swept by No. 2 seed Ateneo in their best-of-three championships.
The Tamaraws emerged as the top seed after topping the elims.
Athletic director Mark Molina issued a statement on Wednesday thanking Capacio for serving the school faithfully for four years where he brought the Tamaraws to three Final Four appearances.
Capacio also acted as assistant coach of the team for two years.
"FEU accepts the resignation of Glenn Capacio as head coach of the FEU Tamaraws," said Molina. "Coach Glenn gave his best to his alma matter the past six years (four as head coach) and we are thankful for this."
Capacio's decision came after he was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. He was rushed there when his blood pressure shot up during halftime of Game 2 against the Ateneo Blue Eagles. In that game, where the Tams lost 65-62, his assistant coaches led by Richie Ticzon and Louie Gonzales took over the chores where they pushed the Eagles to the limit.
Capacio was elevated to the head coaching ranks in 2007 after the school "disbanded" its team following a disappointing 2006 campaign.
For now, Capacio, who won the 1983 UAAP Most Valuable Player, will concentrate on his role as one of the assistant coaches of the Philippine Patriots in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League.

Richie Ticzon to coach Tams

Former Ateneo and PBA hotshot Richie Ticzon will handle the coaching chores for Far Eastern University when the Tamaraws compete in the University Games in Dumaguete City later this month.
Ticzon, who came in this year as one of the Tams’ assistant coaches, will take charge of the Tams’ Unigames’ bid on Oct. 24-30 following the resignation of coach Glen Capacio, according to FEU board representative Anton Montinola.
However, Montinola stressed that this does not necessarily mean Ticzon is now a shoo-in for the post vacated by Capacio, who quit after the top-seeded Tams’ failed bid to win the crown.
“The Unigames will be his (Ticzon’s) break-in stint,” Montinola told The STAR. “We still have to consider other options for the PCCL (Philippine Collegiate Champions League) in November and December. There’s no rush to decide now.”
Capacio, whose contract was good until the end of this month, formally resigned from his post of four years yesterday. Last week, the former King Tamaraw wasn’t able to finish calling the shots for the Tams in Game 2 against tormentor Ateneo as he was taken to the hospital at halftime due to hypertension.
“I’m okay now, although sometimes, I still feel a little dizzy. I have to rest and spend more time with my family,” Capacio said.
Although he’s taking time off basketball in the meantime, Capacio said he would willingly take the offer of Norman Black to be one of his assistants in the RP team to the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.
“Of course, I’ll take it because it’s an opportunity to serve our country and at the same time share your talent and expertise to help the boys be better players and person,” he said.
FEU, according to athletic director Mark Molina, has already accepted Capacio’s resignation.
“Coach Glen gave his best to his alma mater the past six years (four as head coach) and we are thankful for this. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Molina said.
Black, Capacio’s adversary in the UAAP finals, expressed surprise over Capacio’s departure from FEU.
“Glen is a personal friend. I’m a little bit sad about that considering his record in his four years as coach in the UAAP; he has a very good record, he’s won a lot more games than he lost,” Black said during the PSA Forum.
“Where I come from in the US, if you have the record that Glen has in college, normally you’ll keep your job for a long time. I guess here in the UAAP, there’s a lot of pressure in coaching and if you don’t win right away, they don’t have a lot of patience with you,” he added.

UAAP Season 73
The UAAP Season 73 was finally over and Ateneo Blue Eagles was crowned champion by defeating the heavily favored Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 65-62 in highly fought Game 2. Ryan Buenafe lead the way by scoring 23 points, his highest this season and was named the Finals MVP.
