YEONGAM, South Korea - Ferrari's Fernando Alonso won a rain-hit and chaotic Korean Grand Prix to seize the Formula One championship lead on Sunday after both his Red Bull rivals failed to finish.
In an inaugural race delayed by a downpour, started, stopped again and then re-started behind the safety car after a 48 minute wait, the Spaniard could scarcely believe his good fortune.
With two races to go, and a maximum 50 points to be won under the new scoring system, Alonso celebrated his fifth win of the year to turn a 14-point deficit into an 11-point lead over Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber.
McLaren's 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton finished second, 14.9 seconds behind, and moved up to third overall with 210 points, 21 behind Alonso.
Brazilian Felipe Massa was third for Ferrari.
"Beautiful, beautiful. You and the whole team deserved this. Grande!" declared Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali over the radio.

RP Patriots embarrass Slammers

Anthony Johnson made sure his return would be a memorable one as he exploded for eight points in the final three minutes to help the Philippine Patriots beat the Chang Thailand Slammers, 54-48, and grab the solo lead in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Season 2 Saturday in Bangkok, Thailand.
Hardly a factor in the first three quarters where he was held to just five points, Johnson rediscovered his deadly touch just in time as the RP Patriots rolled to their fourth straight win in as many outings.
The Slammers slipped to 3-1.
Johnson, who missed the team’s last two games due to hamstring injury, came through with the game’s biggest shot – a huge three-point – that enabled the Patriots to seize the lead for good, 45-43 with 3:36 left.

After the National League championship series, they can shout three letters.

Ross went from baseball’s scrap heap to the top of the heap, landing there as one of the Giants’ most unlikely postseason stars. He was Cody in the Clutch in the NLCS and was selected MVP after the Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Saturday night to advance to their first World Series since 2002.
Acquired Aug. 22 from the Marlins on a waiver claim, Ross was unsure of his role in a crowded outfield rotation. He found his way into the lineup, hit .350 with six extra-base hits and will take his spot in right field for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night in San Francisco.
“I could never imagine being in a situation like this," Ross said. “I’m just going to cherish it. This is a special time for me."
Ross was a surprising power source for the Giants, hitting their first three home runs in the series. He went deep twice off Phillies ace Roy Halladay in Game 1 and added a solo shot off Roy Oswalt in Game 2. He hit an RBI single in Game 3 to break a scoreless tie.
In the series clincher, he doubled off Oswalt to extend a sizzling extra-base hit stretch.
“I felt like a 10-year-old kid," Ross said. “I was screaming, running and jumping as high as I could."
Ross once dreamed of a dangerous career as a rodeo clown, the person who lures the bulls away from fallen riders to protect them from the bucking animals. Ross said he might one day get in the rodeo business and buy some bulls of his own.
He’s got to help rope in the Texas Rangers if he wants to lead the Giants to their first World Series title since 1954, when they were the New York Giants.
“Nobody gave us a shot except ourselves and our fans," Ross said.

The Beermen trailed by four after one quarter, but then began to flex their offensive muscle in the next period to pull away from the Tigers.
They did it behind a 19-9 run in an eight-minute span to overhaul a 25-21 deficit, and made it a 42-34 lead on an Alec Cabagnot jumper with 3:35 to go before the halftime break.
It was no contest from thereon.
The league's winningest franchise registered its third win in four outings, triggering a three-way logjam at the top along with the Alaska Aces and the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.
The win was also the second straight for new coach Ato Agustin after rallying back the Beermen from the depths of a 21-point deficit to nip sister-team Barangay Ginebra last Sunday, 69-68.
Dondon Hontiveros topscored for San Miguel with 27 points, while ending up with 25 markers was Arwind Santos, whose dunk in the final 55 seconds of the game gave the Beermen their biggest lead at 29, 119-90.
Lordy Tugade, slowly getting back to his old form after being sidelined by a knee injury for most of the last season, and Mick Pennisi had 14 each.
Powerade fell to 2-2 in a tie with Barangay Ginebra, Rain or Shine and Air21 in the upper half of the standings.
